Hertfordshire County Show
The bank holiday weekend brought blistering temperatures to Hertfordshire. As UK summers continue to challenge outdoor events, good planning – and flexibility within those plans – is needed to respond.
With tarmac temperatures rising above 53°C, cancelling the dog show classes and advising visitors to leave their dogs at home was, without doubt, the right course of action. A dog’s paw pads can burn and blister at 49°C – so would you walk on it barefoot yourself?
With high air temperatures and humidity, careful thought was also given to amending the livestock grand parades over the weekend, to minimise heat stress on the animals (and handlers!) alike.
